And at 20 points per race, he'd still be way back in second place - so he's lucky. Obviously, I don't like the new, contrived championship system because teams that come out of the box ready to race in February get penalized in August. All the races from February through August are essentially just qualifying races - rights fees for those races should be worth a lot less now that the points earned at those races are discounted severely. The only two races that pay full value are Vegas 2 and Pomona 2. Winning several races prior to the cutdown ought to be worth at least 20 points per race, but, collectively, those wins are only worth a total of 10 points, at best. Sorry, don't care who's leading, don't care who wins, it's just a contrived game of rock, scissors, paper at this point.
Actually, what has been accomplished with the contrived countdown is to screw up at least three exciting come-from-behind scenarios - Pro Stock and Top Fuel and Funny Car would have been exciting to watch under the old system as the early leaders faded and the trailing drivers mounted a late-season come-from-behind charge. Now we've got the equivalent of the "Lucky Dog" system and a win now is worth more than a win in August or February. How about a winner-takes-all race as the Finals in Pomona in 2008 - now that would be exciting! Then it could be hyped for 23 meaningless races.
