INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 5) -- Top Fuel teammates Morgan Lucas and Shawn Langdon rebounded from a slow start to produce some solid numbers Saturday during the second of three days of qualifying for the 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil.
Lucas was the sharper of the two at O'Reilly Raceway Park, punching through the 1,000-foot timers in 3.859 seconds at 314.61 mph in his GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster to earn the No. 5 slot on the provisional grid. Langdon wasn't too far behind, carding a solid 3.904 at 310.27 mph in the Lucas Oil/Dixie Chopper dragster to finish the day in 10th place. Both men, residents of nearby Brownsburg, Ind., will have two final chances to improve Sunday.
"Even though the numbers weren't great last night we actually learned a lot from that run and we were able to use the data we did gather to put together two great passes today," said Lucas, who also ran a 3.904 at 303.37 mph Saturday. "We figured out the track probably wasn't as good as we thought down low and was probably better down track than we originally thought.
"As always, the guys did a great job of figuring it out and the car is real happy. We didn't hurt anything today and we posted some big speed so I'm pumped up."
The top qualifier at the meet so far is just .009 seconds quicker than Lucas.
Like Lucas, Langdon fired two great shots in Rounds 2 and 3, running a 3.929 at 308.14 mph earlier in the day and finishing with his run of record, the 3.904 at 310.27 mph.
"The 3.92 in the heat of the day was really good for us because the conditions that round were probably pretty similar to what we'll see Monday," Langdon said. "We tuned 'er up for the night run and were actually hoping for a little more but we had some slight tire spin that cost us a little bit. We're still feeling good about what we've accomplished.
"We can certainly improve and the good news is we know how to improve so we'll see if we can't get up into the top half of the field tomorrow. No matter what, we have a great race day tune-up and I know we're going to be in the hunt for the win."
Sunday's final two qualifying sessions are scheduled for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.
