(3-25-2007) SAN ANTONIO, TX – A final round win would have been ideal, but providing the racing world with prove-positive that Danny Rowe Racing has the horsepower and talent to work through adverse weather and track conditions to go the distance is worth its weight in gold.
Early in qualifying, it was apparent that Jimmy Rector and crew were on their game when Rowe piloted the Gainsborough Capital ’63 Chevy Corvette to a 6.184/232.23mph lap in the opening round of qualifying to sit in 2nd place above 18 other Pro Modified drivers.
However, late Friday evening the IHRA staff and San Antonio Raceway Officials were forced to make last minute paving and track repair efforts to the race surface. Despite great efforts, the repair attempt to save the right lane of the drag strip wasn’t enough to provide the competitors with a safe and quality racing surface.
Early Saturday morning, a major change was announced: eighth mile. That’s correct, the higher-up made the call to change the format of the race from quarter-mile to a half-track speed contest over one eighth of a mile. With San Antonio located in the heart of Southern outlaw drag racing territory, the change up wasn’t something the Texas fans were against.
“At the end of the day, we’re here to race and represent our sponsors,” Rowe said. “I’d like to have run the race we planned on here this weekend, but every racer out here is faced with the same ordeal. The fact of the matter is that we’re going to go out and run this ’63 Chevy Corvette for these fans and Gainsborough Capital, Impact Racing, Weld Racing, NGK Spark Plugs, Hoosier Tire and Redline Oils; how far we race is just a detail.”
This turn of events provided a major turning of the tables for several competitors as the qualified fields were re-arranged based on 1/8th mile performance; Danny Rowe now sat in the 9th position with a 4.062-second pass at 182.75mph.
In the opening round of eliminations, Danny faced off against Raymond Commisso’s 1967 Chevy Camaro. Performance wouldn’t be the deciding factor as both cars went immediately into bone-jarring tire shake forcing the drivers to earn the win. As Commisso’s ride spun broad side, Rowe pedaled his Unfinished Business 1963 ‘Vette twice; blasting through the 1/8th mile clocks under full power posting a 4.155/178.90mph.
“We were happy to get by Ray in the first round,” explained Danny Rowe. “It’s no secret that every team here is capable of winning, but Commisso has been running very well and we knew that getting this round win would be something we earned.”
In the 2nd round, Rowe would square off with Kirk Kuhns and his ’41 Willy’s Pro Mod. Rowe left first with a .085 light and proceeded right down the San Antonio 1/8th mile to post an impressive 4.062/183.07mph pass over Kuhns who struggled with traction.
The semi-final round provided fans with a classic nitrous versus blower match up with Danny Rowe taking on Burton Auxier. Burton managed the starting line advantage, but the Jimmy Rector horsepower under the hood of the Unfinished Business Corvette proved too much for Auxier as Rowe took the win with a 4.030 at 183.64mph over Auxier’s 4.239/173.03mph.
That win set the Danny Rowe Racing team up for a final round showdown against Ed Hoover behind the wheel of the Trussell Motorsports Corvette. Both cars had been running strong throughout the weekend and the thousands of spectators in attendance were anticipating an exciting race.
Both cars left together, but right at the 330-foot mark Rowe went in to violent tire shake and tried to drive through it, but was forced to lift as the car drifted towards the guard wall. Hoover took the win with a 4.031/183.39mph to Rowe’s slowing 4.597/120.17mph pass.
“Going into the final round, we were very confident,” said Rowe. “Jimmy [Rector] and the rest of the crew did a fantastic job, but we were just slightly off in the final. Overall, we had a great weekend and are excited to be out here racing and going rounds against some of the toughest racers in the business. We’re a threat right now and we’re going to keep reminding people that we’re out here working hard to win races. We’ll be back in Rockingham hunting for an Ironman.”
