Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.038/238.89, Now #10
Best prior run: 9.986/90.86, Was #14

5:51 p.m. Payne got a rerun because a stray radio signal deployed his chutes in the middle of his second qualifying run.

HOW THE HELL DOES THIS HAPPEN??

It was bizarre, chutes were popping left and right. Hopefully they find out what caused it and make sure it doesn't happen again.

Is that device required in ProMod in the first place, and if not, was Payne using one anyway?

Carl, I know it's required in both nitro classes, but I'm not sure about P/M.

The way I understand it...if for any reason the driver doesn't deploy at least one chute by a certain point in the shut-down, then the "auto deploy" dumps both chutes.

Thats why when a driver clicks it way early, and is trying to coast to the turn off and we see the chutes come out, folks complain, "Why did he do that"??
he was going so slow. The driver didn't do it, the auto deploy took over.

The pro mods and alcohol cars require the receiver that dumps the shoots at 1400 feet now too. And if the driver kills the mags, it disables the auto-deploy.

I'm tellin' ya it's a con-spear-a-cee! I've known all along that lettin' those Traxxass boys run amok with them RC controllers was a bad idea . . . ;)

Thanks Mike, I was'nt sure of the footage with nitro at 1,000ft. So it's 1,400 for all ??

And btw good luck this weekend.
Also are you with Chi-Town in Byron the 6th??

The alcohol and pro mod one is a different distance because they still go the full 1/4 mile, but I don't recall how far it is. And yes, I'll be behind the wheel of the Chi-Town at Byron.

Lucy, (that is nhra), you got some splainin to do...:D
Why ?? In this electronic age do you guys realize just how much signal traffic there is at a given event?
  • Team radios
  • NHRA radios
  • EM Shutoff Device signal
  • Fans with scanners
  • Cell Phones
  • Cell Towers
  • Local interference
It is too bad this happened, but seriously why does this board look to blame everything on NHRA. Stuff does happen. Gee, maybe somebody on the Mater can figure out a way to foresee, test, and verify every possible scenario that can ever occur at a race.:rolleyes: C'mon, let's be realistic here.
Really ... sometimes I think people just have to complain about something and must find a way to blame NHRA for it. Did this scenario affect you directly? Stop worrying about things that did not directly affect you and more importantly that you have no control over the outcome or resolution.

Correct me , but I was listening to the audiocast yesterday and I thought I heard the announcer say , two PM's in a row dumped the chutes at the water box ??

Everybody stand back.....

I have the answer....

Besides discrete frequencies involved, issues are always present with electronic control of anything...let-alone the wireless broadcasting and reception of such...

I suggest we go to a mechanical safety back up....

Hot Wheel-like pits in the shutdown lanes with aircraft carrier arrestor hooks, and of course, drivers capsules like dragboats, that way, the hook grabs the car, the car slows too fast, the capsule spits out of the car like a cherry pit between your fingers....and a second finishline to record the "bonus" finish....which can be rolled into the NHRA countdown points....

Let me know....I'm gonna go patent it....

Are they using analog signals? That would be plain stupid if they are. In this day and age we have digital which, if implemented properly, should be immune to most stray signals, especially if it's encrypted. Sounds like they went the cheap and easy solution and it finally bit them in the ass.
