Stott Gains a Little Ground in Epping

September 13, 2006 - Epping, NH - Quain Stott has been here before. It has been almost six seasons since Stott and his LeeBoy Paving Equipment team have had to count points this close, this late in the season. The year was 2000. The first season of the new millennium saw Stott battle eventual World Champion Fred Hahn down to the last race. Stott needed a little help or a head to head match up to capture his first championship. He fell just three rounds short of his goal.

Fast forward six years. With three races remaining in the IHRA Drag Racing series, Stott controls his own destiny. Just 15 points separate Stott from Glen Kerunsky in the Torco Competitionplus.com Pro Mod class, less than one round. The Torco Race Fuels powered team gained two points during the Amalie Oil North American Nationals.

"We just couldn't figure out the track," said Stott. We ran fourteen with a two (6.142ET - 232.63MPH) on Friday night, we tried something a little different Saturday during the day and then we came back and ran a fourteen with a nine (6.149ET - 232.83MPH)."

Stott would qualify seventh and face Harold Martin in round one of eliminations. "We came out and shook the tires Sunday morning against Harold," explained Stott. "Heck, Harold put both of my cars on the trailer [referring to a semi final loss for teammate Tommy D'Aprile]."

"I spoke with Glen [Kerunsky] and Jimmy [Rector, crew chief for Danny Rowe] after the race," said Stott. "I told them none of us must want this championship. We're just leaving the door open for someone behind us." Danny Rowe would take over the points lead momentarily as Kerunsky and Stott would fall in the first round. Rowe would then give the lead back to Kerunsky after a 15 point penalty for oiling the track in his loss to Harold Martin. "It's like a heavy weight boxing match," Stott added. "It's going to be a toe to toe battle from here to Rockingham."

Stott will take advantage of a chance to get a few more rounds of competition at Rockingham Dragway this weekend at the ADRL Eastern Race Fuels DRAGSTOCK III event. Stott has won two of the three "outlaw" events that he has entered this season.

"Rockingham is LeeBoy country," said Stott. "This race is big for us in a lot of ways. It's a chance to be with about 300 of LeeBoy customers at a great event. Plus, it gives us another shot to gain some data on this drag strip. That may come in handy later on." Over 140 cars are expected for the event, qualifying for Pro Mods begins Friday, September 15 at 8:30PM.
