<P> (8/31/08) CLEREMONT, Ind. - Stivers HVAC Pro Mod driver Rick Stivers dropped to the No. 14 qualifying spot in the JEGS ProMod Challenge at the MAC Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals. Stivers made one unsuccessful pass in the heat of the day and was not able to make a run in the evening session due to extensive track repairs required when Steve Engle crashed into the wall at the top end of the track.
"I don't really like to talk about accidents, but I do want to send my prayers and best wishes out to Steve and Tonya. He is such a great guy, and I really want to see him bounce back quickly," Stivers said.
"I'm not superstitious really, but even though we all know it's a dangerous sport, we just try to look past that and enjoy the thrill and competition of what we get to do," he said.
The first session of the day in his special edition "Support our Troops" Corvette netted a disappointing 8.542/104.87 for Stivers and tuner Quain Stott, due largely to the 125 degree track temperature.
"Everyone was having trouble hooking up on the track this afternoon, and we just couldn't get the traction to put horsepower on the ground. The evening was going to be our shot to get into the top half of the field, but that just didn't work out.
"We'll go a lot faster tomorrow, even though it should be hot then, too. Race day will be the same conditions, so, we just have to be ready to make it run. I'm totally confident that we'll put a good number down in qualifying and do really well in the first round of eliminations tomorrow night. For now, we're just praying that Steve gets better fast," Stivers said.
Qualifying continues with one final qualifier at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon before the first round of eliminations Sunday evening at 5:10 p.m. The balance of eliminations will be run on Labor Day beginning at 11 a.m.
