It’s the Monday of race week and Greg Stanfield has run out of things to do in his Bossier City, La. Pro Stock engine-building shop, which is as rare as a bi-partisan political agreement in Washington, D.C.
Stanfield does have a good reason for his idle time. The final 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event – the 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California Nationals – begins its four-day run Thursday in Pomona, Calif., and he has the motors ready to go to work.
Stanfield, driving the Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks GXP, stayed among the top five or six drivers for most of the campaign before slipping to eighth place (2,238 points).
However, he believes the team is capable of getting into the winner’s circle on Sunday.
“We ran well at the first Pomona race this year (the Winternationals, Feb. 27),” said Stanfield, who lost to Jason Line in the final round. “We hope to go out a winner. That would make up for all the problems we’ve had this year and make our off season a lot better.”
“We are going to give it everything we’ve got. We have good (tuning) notes and data to look at.”
