Sponsor Poaching

With Rocky Boots going over to DSR, is it a poaching job by the Don or is it just a sponsor wanting more exposer? what's your thoughts?

In the end, it's the sponsor's decision to choose whatever team they choose! So no, IMO, there is no poaching! If Rocky Boots feels that DSR will give them more exposure as a result of better cars, then so be it! Rocky Boots probably made that decision based on historical records, but who knows if they made the right decision.....only time will tell! Kalitta can easy go out there and dominate IMO!

I don't think any of the fuel teams can easily go out there and dominate...nothing easy about it

If you don't think ALL the teams send letters and making phone calls to all the sponsers saying they can give them more/bigger/better exposure you are kidding yourself. That is just the name of the game.

Poaching? Good grief, Jim. Don't you think that ANYONE that has a chance to be a part of DSR..wouldn't jump at the chance??

Don see's an opportunity and probably makes his case with the sponsor..win, win.

It is called business. No different than Tommy D. going to Kalitta. Sponsors have to make decision on where to spend their money and Rocky decided to take their dollars to DSR just like Tommy D decided to take his tool box elsewhere.

I agree with Paul.

It's not really "poaching". If a team can offer more exposure for the dollar or less dollars for the same level then the business making the commitment would be silly not to take the better offer.

There are a lot of influencing factors, including who is representing them (in relation to target market), history, loyalty.

This is no slight on the Kalitta team, it's just business.

drivers / sponsors / crew chiefs / .....hired, fired, moving, staying....
somewhere, somehow, some year at least some of these moves have to
start and end with relationships, and i'm not talking about business relationships.
it's a lot of people moving around the country every year, staying in
similar or same hotels.....there's more time in the day than just @ the track.

It happens in every motorsport, not just NHRA. McLaren poached Vodafone from Ferrari. Ricky Rudd poached Tide from DW. It is just business.

DSR has been very successful at attracting sponsor's from other teams. Good teams have lost their sponsor to DSR and although I can't recall the details it seems that a team or two has folded due to the loss.

I think there should be a hands off policy (much like pro sports) and the receving team should pay a penalty if a sponsor changes teams from one year to the next.

I'm not saying DSR is anything right or wrong but even business needs rules.

How would that work? Rocky Boots takes a hard look at their program and decides they want to up their investment in NHRA racing and go to a bigger team, and maybe spend more money. So you're going to say to them "no, I'm sorry, you have to stay with your original team"? Ugh...

We already have NHRA setting rules saying that if you want to be a major sponsor on a pro team you also have to be an NHRA sponsor. There are dozens of little rules about what you can and can't do on the midway.

We need to make it easier for companies to sponsor, not harder.

What? We need the NHRA telling teams and sponsors how to conduct business? Sounds like a bunch of BS to me. This is a big boy sport, not a sport where we need "big brother" watching over everything and telling teams how to conduct their business. If the sponsor wants to leave their current team, who cares, it's their $$ and they can spend it how they see fit. I am just happy Rocky hasn't packed their bags and went elsewhere.

The NHRA is already telling everyone that is involved how to conduct business. For every sponsor that just moves to another team how many leave due to the lack of ethics? Perhaps that's why some sponsors have left completely.

Penalty would be on the team not the sponsor.

Ethics in business? What decade are you stuck in? Sponsors leave for a variety of reasons. NHRA has forced more companies to leave due to the exclusivity contracts than competing teams attracting the others sponsor. Do you really want that brain-trust dictating to race teams how to conduct themselves in regards of how to do business?

My company sells software to large merchants, banks and airlines around the globe. If I were to get offended that a competitor may try to sell into them and displace us, I would be sorely mistaken. What this means is that I have to have a better solution and provide a superior ROI. This is the same in racing. There contracts are for big bucks and come with expectations of getting the best ROI possible... If you don't do it, someone else will. Name of the game from where I sit.
