Spent four years of my life on the deck of the USS Midway dodging engines, wings, jet exhaust, prop wash.

Best time of my life believe me. Nothing like it in the world except for standing at the starting line in between the fuelers at launch time.

I am lucky to have experienced both and lived to tell the stories surrounding them!

My favorite memory (I was on an oiler)..is being plugged into a carrier going 18 knots during night ops!! Yeehaa..amazing..but scary.

LOL..no kiddin.

For those that haven't seen it.

Imagine an oiler within distance enough to shoot a rope line over..that gets connected to a pulley (4 times..usually)..this is while you're traveling 18 knots (roughly 20 mph). The pulleys are connected to 12-14 inch hoses which have a connector on the end. These get coupled to whomever we are re-fueling. Aircraft carrier..4 football fields long..our's 2. Basically a close to crude oil (JP5..or Av Gas..for the jets)..is pumped across at an amazing rate..all the while..jets are taking off..AT NIGHT!!!

I've seen a ship on each side..but not during night ops..scary sh!t.

Imagine the ships up and down..at different times..moving closer..farther apart..all being compensated by steam winches...zzzzrrrr.

An old co-worker of mine, was in the Navy. I asked what he did in the Navy. He said he served on a carrier. (I forget the name) I asked what his job was. He said all he had to do was keep the vending machines full! I asked if he was able to go on deck and watch takeoffs and landings. He said there was a viewing area he could go to, if his vending machines were all full. I asked him if it was the coolest thing on Earth to go up and watch. he said he never went up to watch! Can you imagine?

Yep, I agree Justin. Regarding the video this thread points to, The Discovery Channel produced a similar documentary called "Anatomy of a Supercarrier" and ran it on The Military Channel. Well worth seeing if you get the chance. One thing that stood out to me was the guys on the flight deck are wearing different colored jackets based on what are their duties. Also, the guy who acts as the shooter (the one who launches the plane) as well as many of the other deck personnel, are actually aviators doing their present job as part of a rotation. One time they might actually be flying the plane, another time they're the shooter, another time they're working the flight deck directing planes. I found it all very interesting.
