So the "Ace" is in the booth.....

Mr. Fix It

He compliments Ron Capps as well as Tim & Kim Richards. Pretty cool I'd say. Then your favorite announcer, Paul Page goes and says; "Gee, Capps' car has really turned around since Tim Richards has taken that car over...." Ace is standing in the booth still.

Page; Is he really that good? It's a wonder McCullough didn't deck the guy....

In the past he might have decked him. Ace was a bad ass!

That was just a real clueless, classless and ignorant statement on Page's part. I sincerely believe Page didn't even realize the implication of what he said. Wow.

Paul Page is just not in tune enough with the sport to be where he is. He's had what.............three years? To get a handle on it. And hasn't yet. And likely never will. He was good at Indy cars. Send him back to them.

That comment he made was a real slap in Ace's face and very classless, Paul Page is just plain stupid, I always wonder which one of his relatives got him the job at ESPN.

that comment sure made me cringe...and at least on the ESPN3 coverage it was REAL quiet there until they switched to a pit reporter...

and ya, Paul Page may have been around drag racing for a long time, but he still just doesn't get it...and more often than not it is painful listening to him

Well, Capps' performances really has turned around since Tim Richards has taken that car over....................just saying.

I, like most of us, cringed when Paul said that but then I took a few seconds to reflect on some of my own brain-fade moments and thought maybe I should cut him some slack. He's human and he made a mistake. Big deal.

It's easy to sit here and complain about his performance during race coverage - heck I've done it myself. And yes, there are times when he is difficult to listen too. But I decided a long time ago that it's not because he isn't trying and it isn't because he doesn't care. He is who he is and ESPN is obviously satisfied with his performance. I find that I can and often do learn something from him every time I watch a telecast, as long as I don't spend the entire show looking for things to criticize.

Regardless, I doubt very seriously that he intended to direct any malice toward Ace. The fact is, the car has performed much better since Tim & Kim showed up and Paul is trying to fill 11 hours of TV time at the Big Go so he accidentally made a comment that was somewhat ill-advised. That said, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to learn that Paul realized what he said and offered sincere apologies to Ace off air. I'm not saying it did or didn't happen, only that it wouldn't surprise me. Ace is a pretty tough hombre with some pretty thick skin, I bet he's going to be just fine.

Didn't Ace retire before Tim and Kim joined the team? I don't remember Ace being fired, he just decided "that's enough."

I don't think that Paul Page meant anything bad by it. Just a little ill-timed.

Lance = FACT!

Hell, I like Ace! He's the man. However, I'm sure Ed over the years had thrown a lot of facts in other faces they didn't agree with! New nickname: Big Balls Paul.

Ace handled in style. With Class. Ace (and I feel to) knows he is a great crew chief and has a ton of knowledge. He doesn't feel threatened by Page's comment.

Maybe, just maybe, Paul asked Ace : "Can I comment on the turnaround with Capps?"

This happens.

We all understand that and agree with that, but the tact used by Mr. Potato head was not good in any way shape or form. Didn't he realize that Ace was standing next to him? Sorry but he is just not too smart. Don't forget the Dave Armstrong comment when he was talking about Dale Armstrong. Get the marbles out of your mouth Paul Page.

Rick

John Medlen was Capps CC before Tim & Kim took over, so what is wrong with what PP said? Not a big PP fan, but on this occasion he was spot on. The "Ace" retired at the end of 2010.

EXACTLY

it seems to me to come from the need he has to fill EVERY second with talking

...and before anybody tells me someone is telling him to continually babble; think about the Sportsman or Pro Mod shows with Dave Reif or Bob Frey...they seem to know when to talk and when to keep their mouths closed

I don't think Mike or Ace would have skipped a beat. If Ace would have knocked out Paul. They would have just kept calling the race :)
I am just saying ...

I don't see anything wrong with what PP said,he spoke the truth. And "Ace" was'nt even the last crew chief before the Richards took over. You people make a big deal over NOTHING.

Big Deal? I'm not making a big deal over it. I know there were others after "the Ace" that ran the show over there. However, he did run the show at one time. McCullough praised the current team when he could have just been more generic in his commentary.

With that, I simply thought the comment was in poor taste considering the implication as most others here do. Everyone can slip up from time to time. I just felt like that was a pretty big slip and a bit disrespectful.

How would Paul Page feel if someone commented on how well the show went when Steve Evans announced on the show? There have been other announcers since that time.

Announcing and tuning a fuel car are two vastly differents things.

PP said that the napa car has picked up since the Richards came on board, thus (in my mind) indicating that the last crew chief was'nt getting it done. Ace was not the last crew chief.

And i'm sure PP would agree Steve Evans was a great commentator back in the day. I'm not defending PP,i just don't see the disrespect to the Ace in his comment.

Anybody willing to acknowledge that the pre-air conversation went like this:

Paul: "Ace, do you mind if I talk about the Napa guys and Capps"
Ace: "Paul, I hope you will. "

Damn!
