[coverattach=1]As Pro Stock qualifying concluded at the NHRA Lucas Oil Slick Mist Nationals the Steve Kent Racing Pro Stock team led by driver Rodger Brogdon knew that they had not made the sixteen car Pro Stock field, yet there wasn’t a disappointed member of the team to be found.
With the race in Arizona being their first event of the year for Brogdon and team, to a man they were pleased with the results from four solid laps down the Firebird Raceway track. With a new in house engine program providing power for the team, being able to compare against the best that NHRA has to offer showed the team that they have made a tremendous amount of progress in just a few short months.
In Saturdays early qualifying session, the team showed just how close they are by being the sixteenth quickest for that qualifying session. And that run was made on the team’s second motor after the primary engine suffered a loss of oil pressure during Fridays qualifying. As good as that third session was, when qualifying concluded it just wasn’t enough to make the show on Sunday. The team missed the qualified field by a mere eight hundredths of a second.
As Rodger Brogdon put it, “We’re close, oh so close, but in today’s Pro Stock racing, close just doesn’t count. What we have been able to pinpoint this weekend are a couple of areas that we will have to address to work our way into the field. Now that we have some solid data to work with, we can get back to work in the shop, make some changes, and then get some quality test laps in knowing what we need to look for. We’ve got some catching up to do after missing Pomona, but with what we learned this weekend, we should certainly be ready for the next race.”
The team will test over the next couple of weeks in preparation for the next stop on the NHRA Full Throttle tour, the AC Delco Gatornationals in Gainesville, FL. With that race coming on the March 12-15 weekend, the team will be focused on the changes necessary to make what is always a very quick and tough Pro Stock show. And after this weekend, the anticipation is already sky high.
