BUDDS CREEK, MD. – Robert Patrick said he wasn’t aware that Frank Gugliotta had crossed the center-line and moved into his lane during his Friday evening session. There was a good reason. The Fredericksburg, Va.-based driver was ahead – way ahead.
Patrick was so ahead that Gugliotta admitted the he wished he could draft his bumper into the 6.30s.
Patrick tied the current IHRA Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com Pro Stock world record established by Brian Gahm with a 6.299 elapsed time at 221.31 miles per hour. His run nailed the provisional No. 1 spot headed into Saturday’s qualifying.
Patrick became the second driver in the class to run in the 6.2-second range.
This tremendous effort puts Patrick in prime position to defend his Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com Pro Stock Showdown crown. As prestigious as winning that special “race-within-a-race” is, Patrick said his focus is on securing a first-ever world championship.
Patrick leads the championship point standings with one race remaining after this weekend.
“Last year, we totally dominated the event and won,” Patrick said. “But, on Sunday we came out and lost and that took us out of the title chase. While we want to win every time we race, our primary objective is to secure the world championship.
“But you can count on that we will try to collect that $20,000 Saturday night as well.”
