Rickie Smith headed into Rockingham Dragway this past weekend with thoughts of getting ready for the 2008 season, but not before he went a few rounds on Sunday.
Smith qualified in the seventh position and then clinched the most consistent qualifying award for the 2007 season. He made the most consistent runs out of every other Pro Stock car driver in the class, making 32 of his 34 qualifying runs down the track, absolutely unheard of in the IHRA class.
First round he had to face off against Tom Lee who is always good on the tree, but Smith let everyone know he still had what it took to get the win. Cutting a good light and running a great 6.347et at 219.29mph to take the win first round.
Second round he was up against John Nobile, who had been flying all weekend. Smith once again knew he would have to be stellar on the tree if he wanted to win this one. Cutting a great light against Nobile, Smith would hang on and take the holehot win into the semi-finals, running a 6.366et against Nobile’s 6.352et.
Having to run Jeff Dobbins in the semis was going to be tough on Smith. Dobbins had been the quickest car in eliminations all day, but Smith did all he could as he came up a little short on the top end as Dobbins outran him.
“We had a good day,” said Smith. “We can’t seem to get this car off the line and 60 foot like we want it, but overall we went a few rounds and I am happy to get things going for next year.”
Smith finished out the 2007 IHRA season in eighth position in the points. Smith will spend the off-season preparing for next year, but not before trying to help his son win his first NHRA Championship.
