Rickie Smith Is Determined to Figure Kinks Out In Car

IHRA Seven-time World Champion, Skull Gear Pro Stock driver, Rickie Smith was very hopeful of his 2007 IHRA return season behind the wheel of his new Chevrolet Cobalt, however his season hasn’t gone all to plan.

Qualifying in the middle of the field and winning rounds here and there throughout the year, Smith has not lived up to his own expectations, which I have to say are higher than most.

“We ran well last year,” said Smith. “And we tested well all through the winter too. I am not sure if something is wrong in the car or in the motor, but you can bet I am going to figure it out. I can normally figure out anything and everything that is wrong with a racecar, but this one has just stumped me.”

This week Smith will be taking his motor along with John Montecalvo’s motor up to Sonny Leonard’s Engine shop to dyno them both and see what the difference may be. Not thinking it is a motor issue, but knowing that whatever the outcome is that things will be fully determined by the end of the week.

“We are going to compare motors,” said Smith. “If the motors run around the same then I will know something is wrong with my car. I have already ordered a new water pump and many other things as well, in order to be ready in case it is not a horsepower problem. I have also set it up to have another car in the next few weeks if this one is the problem.”

Smith will be testing later on in the week after going to Leonard’s shop in Virginia. But you can bet that you can’t keep a good man down long, and if anyone is a testament to that statement, it is Rickie Smith.
