Evidently, there's never any joy in Mudville around here, no matter what happens. This is simply a cash incentive for the top teams to race for during the "regular season", and logically, what else could NHRA call this end-of-the-regular season bonus? Since points are reset for the Countdown, being number one after Indy means very little, but this will create a reason for the top 5 or 6 teams to actually compete for a meaningful prize as the regular season comes to a conclusion. The bottom line is that more money means increased competition, and NHRA branding it as a carrot to be chased makes perfect sense.
BTW, my guess is that this is, in some part, NHRA's response to the rebirth of IHRA. If my team was in contention for this bonus after, say, Epping or Bristol, I'd think twice before diverting resources to run in any other sanctioning body's series, even in the 3-week breaks before and after the Western Swing.
