OSHAWA, ONTARIO (August 26, 2009) – The future with drag racing, as with any sport, is the youth involved. Young people want to race, but there are few who work behind the scenes.
Now 17 years old, Rachael Olin is a mainstay with the Eric Latino PMRA Pro Modified crew. She is a vital part in the team’s success, and thrashes just as much as any team member on the 1938 Chevy Coupe.
“I’ve always been involved,” she said about her automotive background. “Dad has raced, and I’ve grown up with cars.”
Rachael, who will be going into grade 12 this year, is the daughter of team crew chief Peter Olin.
“There aren’t many young people who want to get involved as much as Rachael does,” said team owner and car driver Eric Latino. “And to have a girl involved is outstanding. She does a great job, and we thank her for her efforts.”
Pro Modified car builder Jim Salemi, of G-Force Race Cars, has been helping the Latino team this summer, and he has nothing but praise for Rachael.
“She is just amazing,” noted Salemi. “She is not afraid to get in there and do anything. I’ve seen her taking a Lenco apart. Rachael is not shy at all working on this race car.”
Rachael admits she enjoys getting right into the thick of things.
“I don’t mind getting my hands dirty,” she said. “I’d like to get into this as a career. I’d like to be a mechanic.”
When asked if she would like to get into a race car, she nodded in the affirmative.
“Sure, I want to drive. We’re working on something now, a dragster. The boots already fit. “We’ll see if it happens.”
Rachael also said she enjoys the atmosphere at the drag strip. “I like the people; it’s nice, like a big family. We talk cars all the time.”
Whether it’s adjusting the valves, checking the tire pressures, or packing the parachutes, Rachael is all business when it comes time to race, and right now she is pleased with her contributions.
“I really enjoy seeing the car go,” she said. “It’s great to see all that hard work pays off.”
Rachael’s next event will be the Fourth Annual PMRA Challenge at the Grand Bend Motorplex on Labour Day Weekend.
The Teamsters Canada Thunder by the Beach Weekend presented by Rudy Held's Performance Centre will be featuring the "Night of Nitro" Nitro Funny car Match races between IHRA World Champion Dale Creasy Jr. and Canadian star Jason Duschene, plus Nostalgia Alcohol Funny cars and the Fourth Annual - PMRA Challenge. This high-profile event will take place Saturday and Sunday, September 5-6 at the Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend, Ontario.
The weekend will also include the popular Quick 32 Sportsman Series, Quick 32 Sportsman Series, presented by NAPA Auto Parts, featuring Top Dragster and Top Sportsman action all weekend with exciting six and seven-second race cars. Highlights Saturday night will include the Nitro Funny Car Match Race, the 210-miles per hour Extreme Machine Jet Kenworth, and Geoff Pollard’s 230-miles per hour Top Fuel Drag Bike.
