That was really good and brought back a ton of memories. I just wish we knew the last NHRA national event was the last, I would have soaked it in a lot more. Not sure I agree that 1,000ft racing is what did the place in, pretty sure the local government officials had a more damaging impact. During the time period, NASCAR saw very similar declines as NHRA saw. All we have left are the memories.

So does Rich still own the track? Do they still do any kart or MX racing? Also, wasn't there a story that it was being sold for $75 Mil to a big auto wreckage company, maybe Copart? I may have it all wrong. Either way, it was a great track and had an amazing run.

Did they not close it on their own -not forced to close-they were all ways pressured to close- but I believed they did it on their own

They still own the track. They still run the road course for drifting. They still have the motocross track. They leased part of the property to a competitor of Copart.

Bob, thanks for posting this. This was pretty emotional for me. I grew up about 30 minutes from Englishtown. Saw my first Wednesday Match Race in 1971 and was eternally hooked. Saw most Summernational, Division Races, Wednesday Match Races (and the Grateful Dead Concert) until 1980 when I moved to the Midwest. I revisited in '82 and '92 and had plans in place to go back in 2018 before they announced that that it was over. My avatar is the Cassidy Bros. BB/FC and I went through several "Bob's Beserko Lounge" T-Shirts (paging Bobby Doerrer).

Yeah, me too. I went for the first time when I was probably 8 yo with my neighbors. Slingshots were still running then.
I kick myself for the times I didn't go because I didn't do good in the extreme heat, or the traffic or the costs, too busy, etc. It was 75min from my house when I lived in Jersey, and now I travel down there (Sayreville) from northeastern PA almost 2-3 times a week for work . Been helping do interior work on Rich's other T-Bird at my buddy's shop. Rich is doing a heroic job putting all his archival films out to us gear heads....follow him here @richnapp

You truly don't know how good you have it until it's gone...
