I never used one if these, but I believe you just hook it up to a USB 2.0 port and then hook your VCR to it, and just record the video to your hard drive. Afterwards you would simply upload it to Youtube.

But Sam, HOW do you get it off of a VHS onto your PC or Mac?
Joe,

When you have the capture device installed in your computer, you can connect your VCR to it. (usually with RCA cables or coax cable) Once all the connections are made you can press play on your VCR, then click "Capture" on you computer (capture software also required) and it will record the contents of you VHS tape onto your hard drive. When you're all done capturing the video, you can edit that video using editing software. Once you have a finished product that you're happy with you can upload it to youtube.

This is just a quick summary, hopefully it helps answer your question.

Brian. :)

Edit: Sam beat me to it. I got a phone call while typing my reply. His reply wasn't there when I started typing. :)

Joe,

This is similar to what I'm using. It's a "video capture card" and fits into an expansion slot in my computer.

They also make a USB version if your expansion slots are full.

If you're going to buy a capture card you might want to look into a TV tuner card that has a composite or s-video input...kill 2 birds with 1 stone. I've got a Hauppauge WinTV PVR 150 card (WinTV-PVR-150 product description) that I use for a DVR and it also has composite video and audio inputs to capture video from a VCR or camcorder.

I tried that dazzle one for $80.00, but the one I got was not vista compatible, so I had to return it.
Then, I got the usb one with the 4 wires pictured above from eBay. It was only $10.00.
My vids did not turn out well tho. Lots of pixelation, the sound is really bad, lots of dropout.
Here is an example:

Lots of big squares, it sounds warped.....
I know it happens in the transfer process from the VHS to the computer.
At that point, the vids already are pixelated and blotchy and the sound is weird sounding.
It's not from the upload to youtube.

I've been looking at VHS-to-DVD recorders. I might get one of those. They are pricey and from the reviews I've read, they have issues as well.

At first, I thought it was those $70.00 dollar units, but those are only for recording DVD-to-VHS.......which makes no sense at all.

Looks like $300.00 for a DVD-R recording machine.

I'll let you know what I end up with and we can compare notes.

Way too much compression! It even seems to have been transcoded (compressed and then compressed again) which gives it such a horribly pixelated look and bad sound. You must have overlooked a setting somewhere to adjust the bitrate for better quality.
