As if having a dominant Championship season wasn't enough, the Prock Rocket pulls out all the stops and lays down the first official 340 in NHRA competition, a 341.68 in the first round. Way to go, Team Force!

I wonder what speed they ran at the 1/8th mile?

They ran 289 at 660
JR Todd actually ran 291 right afterward - but .04 seconds behind Prock's time. Interesting how the CC's tune the cars for different parts of the track. Some hot down low, some in the middle, some in the traps. Prock could have easily run 3.79 or so but Dad wanted that 340 BAD, and knew he might never have another shot at it.

For what it's worth, Tasca's non-NHRA 340+ was identical to Prock's; 341.68. So the "I'm the fastest" remains unresolved. :)

Prock's run came with the NHRA mandated rev limiter so I think he has to be labeled as the fastest. The bad side is NHRA will limit it even more now. We'll probably never see those numbers again in a national event.

Tasca did it in Florida, at an exhibition race. Prock is the first one to do it at a sanctioned NHRA event.
Yes and that's important. And the PRO event at Bradenton was anything but an exhibition race. The richest drag race ever, the winner's purse for both TF and FC was $250,000, 5X what NHRA pays.

Tasca ran 341.68. Prock ran 341.68. Prock will be remembered for the first official, sanctioned 340 and the national record. Tasca will be remembered for the first to break the barrier using the same car he ran several 338+ passes on NHRA tracks (I witnessed one in person) so it wasn't a fluke run with the timing retard removed, underweight, 100 percent nitro, etc. Prock's run carries a lot more weight but when the dust settles, both drivers ran 341.68 and Tasca was the first. When someone runs 341.69 they can say "I'm the fastest". :)

Congrats to "Kid Prock" and all his crew for winning the championship and for the amazing speed and time in a funny car. I'm sure there will be a meeting this morning at NHRA on how to slow these cars down before we see 340 on a regular basis now they know it can be done. I believe it was Dick La Haie who once said this cars could do 350 MPH if NHRA would loosen some restrictions.

I don't know about that. That was one run and in two other runs under the same conditions, they didn't even come close to running that speed again.

Where is your proof that the car was on 100% nitro, the timing box was altered, and the car was light?

So I suppose Eddie Hill's 4.99 run at Dallas doesn't count because it happened at an IHRA race?

Should Prock's run count since it happened at a track that is beyond NHRA's starting line to finish line track grade percentage rule?

It will be funny, 30-40 years from now, when these two old men are "discussing" who had it first, kind of like the chats between Big Daddy, The Greek, and Connie about who had the first 200. Always puts a smile on my face to hear those guys talk about that. And now, a new treat for future generations of fans - first 340.
