Portland's finest ambushed car exhibitors with tickets just for slowly passing a fire hydrant as they were waiting to get into the Oregon Convention Center. read about this big bruhaha at Cap Racing Home Page you won't believe it.

That is complete BS! I would call the Portland office of Transportation and give them an ass-chewing. 503-823-5195

This is total BS.:p Just wonder what the people of Portland think about they're wonderful Mayor and City Council. Maybe the people should show up at the voting booths at the next election, it's the only way to make a change.

That is BS!!! I glad you pulled out of line and left... that's exactly what I would have done too! It sucks that you didn't make the show though...

They think sitting in traffic is "parking"? I think they KNOW they don't think that! They CAN'T be that stupid, socialists or not!

Wow! Wait till all the other governments get ahold of this one! Think of all the money they can raise from all those motorists who "park" in traffic EVERY DAY on their way to and from work! This could be bigger than toll roads!

If you don't think our government(s) are way beyond being self empowered? They work behind the fact that it's often not feasible for you to fight things. I've paid wrong tickets many times because I can't afford to fly back into to town to fight the stupid things.

A Texas trooper recently pulled me over for going 5 MPH over the limit. He did me a "favor" by letting me off on that one, while writing me a $118 seatbelt ticket. As if he really would have written me for 5 over in the first place. It's all a ****in' racket!

Exactly!!!

I recently built a motorcycle from scratch. I started with 40 feet of tubing from the local steel yard, a tubing bender and a welder. Long story short.... it took seven months of "hoop jumping" before I finally got a VIN number and a title issued to me. It took longer to get it titled than it did to build it!! At one point in the process the lady at the state flat out called me a liar. (I proved her wrong) Another time when I was there I asked the lady... "why are you making this so difficult for me?" She said... "well, you're the one who built a vehicle from scratch" I said... "yeah, so what? That's perfectly LEGAL!"

I realized at that very moment that making it difficult to title a vehicle is how the state controls the number of hand made vehicles. It may not be illegal, but they're gonna make damn sure you go through hell while doing it!

The next time traffic is stacked up on I-5 because of a bridge lift I wonder if these same idiots will be waiting with ticket books in hand.

Well thats just it, its always stop and go in front of hydrants all the time. It's obvious that this was pre-planned. And the thing is a lot of those exhibitors are from out of town and can't return to fight these tickets.

C'mon, Rich. Don't you know "revenue enhancement" when you see it?

And you didn't do your part? I'm VERY disappointed........;)

Brent called and raised hell with the city and he got a call back from the mayors office and they said that were disappointed that the incident happened. Also someone else said that the city is going to dismiss the tickets.

I was taught that you didn't block private or public driveways, fire hydrants or intersections. You leave enough space around it. There's really not much call as far as I can see to go bumper to bumper so much that you are blocking any of those items.

I got told off by an old man who pulled an ill timed U-turn and couldn't fit into the lane behind me because I was there with plenty of space having left room in front for the hydrant. Him being a bad judge of distance and traffic was not enough of a reason for me block the hydrant. It was bad luck that we wound up going into the same place (A restaurant) and he thought he could tell me off. tsk tsk. ;)

Yeah, but if you were in the line it probably would have never occured to you. Also, that fire hydrant was not that easy to see especially when it was on the passenger side. The whole deal was BS.

Fire hydrants are usually on the passenger's side if you are driving on the correct side of the street. I don't think it's an excuse, as blocking a fire hydrant when there is a line is probably more dangerous because it'd be harder for the space to be cleared in an emergency.

It may be BS but ignorance of the law is no excuse. The cop will usually give you a ticket for speeding if you tell him you didn't know the speed limit.

For some reason I don't see the story there Rich. I see the AB / Bernstein story and all of those below it. AM I BLIND????? AAAHHHHHGGGGG!!!!

Jenn,
they don't really offer an alternative as you had to drive by it. And there is no place to unload. And guess what....the Portland Oregon Mayor's office even regrets that it happened so I guess you're on your own with this one.
