The Quality Plus Racing Pro Mod 57 Chevy, owned by Rob Sporring, and driven by Tony Pontieri, traveled west and struck gold at the AC DELCO NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas , Nevada .
Pontieri, who quickly credits his team owner, Rob Sporring for giving him the opportunity of a lifetime, won this event with his left foot. Pontieri was on the tree all day long and won two of his four round wins on hole shots. Car owner Sporring says, “I’ve always had faith in Tony, that’s why he is behind the wheel of my car. He won the race for us today. It’s a testament to my faith in him as a great driver and a hard worker”.
Pontieri, who has a runner up finish at the NHRA St Louis Event, got his prize today after 15 yrs behind the wheel of fast doorslammers. He states, “Man, you do not know what this means to me today. This is such an accomplishment. I have to thank my car owner’s Rob and Anne Sporring and his company Quality Plus Compressors for this opportunity. Without him this would never happen. My lovely wife Doris and my daughter Lilly for their sacrifice, and my crew guys Paulo Dalimonte, Redneck Randy Ward (who gets the last man standing award), Mark Lawrence, truck driver Gord and my nephew Frank. A special thanks goes to Scotty Cannon and Scott Cannon Jr. for their guidance and help during the last races of the year. All of these people make this a reality”.
Pontieri is the second Canadian to win an AMS Pro Mod race since Glen Kerunsky in 2005. Ironically Pontieri took out Kerunsky in the 1st round on a hole shot victory. Pontieri saved the best for last as he strapped a .027 light on Steve Engel who ran an impressive 6.11 @ 237 mph, but could not drive around the Pontieri hole shot and 6.19 @ 230 mph for the win. Sporring stated, “It is real sweet to taste the victory at last. We have been working hard at it all year long. This win goes out to all of our wives for letting us play like kids, to all of our supporters and people that make this class happen. It’s been a long time coming”.
