pomona: tv sights & sounds

maybe i'm just hearing and seeing things, but did anyone else feel a slight difference with
TV show last nite?.....a few more human(driver) interest stories?....nice reporting on pieces
that actually malfunctioned to cause explosions (capps & cruz).
the show just seemed a bit more polished and well done.....kudos to espn & staff.

I noticed it as well. I liked the show overall. There will be some that bash that idea and want strictly racing.
The one thing I don't like is showing a TF or FC run from 3-4 different camera angles during one run.

Glad to hear less of the word 'deal' thrown around in so many of the interviews this race.
Jamie Howe walking the pits talking with Hagan was a great little feature - interview sounded more raw and unscripted, great move. Some small changes to the coverage style from last year - all great changes to freshen up the ESPN show.
Good to see Shane Tucker get some coverage for his debut race in Pro Stock too.
Man, during a Pro Stock round, ESPN still finds ways to cut to the nitro pits like there's no tomorrow.
Unbelievably fast racing - brilliant year ahead for performance in NHRA.

Seemed to me like the crew was making a concious effort to get away from the stock "How did you feel?!?!?" questions, and be more specific to the situation.

If you mean you don't like, say, the first second of a run from one camera and the second second of the run from another camera,... all pieced together, I wholeheartedly agree!

I do like seeing the entire run from a camera angle (or at least, whatever was interesting from that camera for that run), THEN, the entire run from a different camera,...

That is exactly what I meant. I Like the different angles, just not during one pieced together run.

I too liked the walking interview with Hagan, seemed more natural then the generic top end interviews.

I really enjoyed the show also. Liked the flow and the new focus of the interviews. I especially liked the tech material such as showing the damaged parts after some carnage and things like explaining how the valve was dropped. Very visual. Keep up the good work, John and company!

The long shot IMO is the best shot of a drag race. Show the race zoomed out in it's entirety from an up high vantage point... say the back of the stands. I remember seeing a shot from about a half mile out atop a mountain several years ago, it was awesome. I hate the mid track on the wall camera. Zips by in a tenth of of a second and it's a blur - then string that with 4 other camera angles all in a 3.5 second run yuck.

John K. the show is better this year. Please consider a few things, though. Show each run from starting the engine to the turnoff. Change cameras minimally during that period. A lot can/does frequently happen before the hit if you pay attention. Cutting away, talking basketball and covering the video with basketball yada yada yada during this time is NOT GOOD! Pay attention to what is happening. Ask Mikey. He knows and will tell you how to develop and present a more interesting show from that standpoint. After the turnoff show all the different camera angles you want. Everything you did behind the scenes this year was better. Do all/more of it if you can. We do not give a RA about Force's scooter. This is not a bad Discovery Channel show. Get rid of that junk. Last, PLEASE ask Lewis to consider NEVER saying again "Think about this". Thanks. We do notice and appreciate the improvements.

i really enjoyed the show they have really come a long way. as far as the sport goes it's sure has a tough battle on our hand"s. the kid"s don"t seem to be coming out like we did i rember doing anything to get to the races. the drivers to me where like gods . ah! just a old dude living in the past, i still think theres hope for our passion.

of all the hundreds of threads and posts trying to describe the difference from then to now....this simple comment
states it perfectly........those few precious weekends at the drags every summer when the nitro cars ran were
unforgettable
