Payne jumps in the Fives, Hernandez leads in E-Town

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - In front of standing crowds at the ProCare Rx NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, AMS Pro Mods once again displayed the thrills and excitement of Pro Modified drag racing. Josh Hernandez continued his dominance of the fields, delivering a blistering 5.950/243.XX to take the provisional pole heading into the final qualifying round on Saturday.

Jay Payne's first sub-six second run was the highlight of the first round until the chutes got tangled and he drove his Valvoline-sponsored 2005 Stratus into the sand pit. Payne missed the second round, but his crew chief and father-in-law Brad Anderson assured he'd be back in action by Saturday morning. Jay ended the day in the provisional No. 2 spot with his 5.966/242.06 shot.

Shelly Payne's debut of her new Jerry Haas-built '67 Camaro turned heads with the sleek lines and traditional Vavoline paint scheme. Shelly ran 6.162/221.27 to grab the provisional No. 8 position.

Series sponsor Tim Tindle took his Chuck Ford-tuned Mustang to the No. 4 spot with a 6.075/236.84, and said he's feeling good heading into Saturday.

"I think Chuck's got a really good handle on what the track can hold, and I'm confident heading into Saturday and eliminations," Tindle said.

Rick Stivers, also tuned by Ford, ran a strong 6.088/237.38 to take the No. 6 spot and a firm hold on the top-half of the ladder.

Connecticut's Gene Terenzio made the field in the No. 15 spot on the strength of his 6.602/218.51 while local new jersey-boy Joe Mulligan made his Pro Mod Challenge debut with a 6.383/234.13 to jump into the No. 10 provisional spot.

On the outside looking in is No. 2 in the BAE Championship points Raymond Commisso who failed to put together a decent run all day. In both attempts, his R2B2 Motors/Steelback Brewery '68 Camaro struggled to grab the track, running only 9.88/87.

Qualifying concludes Saturday with a final round scheduled for 2 p.m. (EDT) and the first round of eliminations scheduled at 4:30 p.m. Eliminations conclude in the ProCare Rx NHRA SuperNationals on Sunday, June 24 at 11 a.m.
