KERNERSVILLE, NC (May 29, 2008) Doug Winters and the Winters Racing team will return to Atlanta Dragway this weekend to compete in the Aeromotive Nitro Coupe race held at the Super Chevy Show event. This will mark one year back into racing for the team out of Kernersville, NC. “We came here last year during the Super Chevy Show event to get the final passes for my license. Since then, it has been a world wind of things going on.” Doug and his team competed in a handful of events in 2007. For 2008 the plan was to compete in many other events. Mostly with Nitro Coupes at the Super Chevy Shows. “When we retired from drag racing in 2001 we had been running Nitro Coupes for sometime and had gotten a good setup of running 30% Nitro on a Pro Mod engine setup. When we got back into this last year, your basic Pro Mod engine has evolved quite a bit. So much, we lost our tune up. The power is there, we just need to find it without hurting anything.”
Doug and his team thought they were on the fast track after getting two runner ups last year in only three events. But things changed over the winter. The 2008 season on the track has been a disappointment for the Winters Racing team. A number of factors have contributed to their lack of progress. Parts breakage and the weather have been the factors at four events this year. Two of the planned events have been called due to rain. And two other events were lost due to parts breakage. Another factor complicating things is the new setup. “We looked at all the technology out there over the winter and decided we could do better and made some changes to the car. It definitely has put us behind. But in the long run I think we will be better off for the move”. Doug credits his crew for hanging in there during these trying times. “My brother Allen, which is the crew chief, has always been there with me and I think it is harder on him. At least I get the fun of setting in the car and making the runs. He just gets to watch then go back to work on the car. We have other guys on the team that deserve a lot of credit. Tyler, Allen’s son is always there to help and we get a lot of help from Steve Thompson, a friend that we call family as well.”
Even though the on track performance has been lacking this year for Doug, he still thinks overall the team’s objectives are being met. “When you look at a race team’s performance, you not only look at the on track performance, but the off track performance as well. Off track performance is as important, if not more, then on track performance. I think this is where we have excelled. We have partners that count on us representing them and hopefully they see that. At events we take the time to talk to fans and other competitors about the companies we rely on. Sometimes it’s talking about the key benefits of running Mickey Thompson Tires or the safety aspects of the Safe Jacks we use. We have even helped some teams on demonstrating products like Computech’s Weather Stations.”
Doug looks for the Atlanta Super Chevy Show this weekend to turn around his fortunes on the track. “We always seem to do well here. I know it has been a while since we last competed in a race here. But I think this is the weekend and place to get it started.” Nitro Coupes qualify on Saturday May 31st with eliminations set for Sunday June 1st.. Fans can refer to the Super Chevy Show or Atlanta Dragway web sites for a detail schedule, The Official Website of the Super Chevy Show or Atlanta Dragway .
As always, the team would like to thank Torco Racing Fuels, Mickey Thompson Tires, NGK Spark Plugs, Optima Batteries, ARP, Amalie Oil, Safe Jacks, and Computech for their continued support.
