POMONA - Clay Millican had that "if you stay in drag racing long enough you can expect to see some odd things happening" look Friday following his second qualifying attempt for Sunday's NHRA Winternationals at Pomona Raceway.
"Something wasn't right on the run and it turned out to be a pin-size puncture in one of the fuel lines leading to the (fuel pump) barrel valve," said the popular driver from Drummonds, Tenn. "It was spraying fuel around after I shut off the motor, but we don't have any idea what could've caused it. It was frustrating. I guess it was just a drag racing thing."
So, instead of running a low 4.5-second time, he stopped the clock in 4.717 seconds at 303.64 mph. He wound up 15th (4.679 at 315.56 mph) going into Saturday's final two qualifying sessions.
"On the positive side, we are still in the show and we hope to have two good runs and move closer to the leaders."
