Mechanical Problem Slows Millican on Final Qualifying Run

POMONA, Calif. - Just about the time Saturday Clay Millican thought he'd be propelling Evan Knoll's Knoll-Gas Motorsports/Torco Racing Fuels Top Fuel dragster into the starting line-up for Sunday's NHRA Carquest Winternationals, he realized the car wasn't moving as quickly as he'd hoped.

It eventually slowed to 9.719 seconds and Millican wound up 17th, two-thousandths of a second out of the top 16.

"That was surprising," said a dejected Millican. "We had a mechanical failure somewhere. Some other good cars didn't qualify either, but I thought coming in here -- with the way we tested -- that we would qualify in the top half of the field and go some rounds on Sunday. Going into that last session I really felt we'd pull out a hero run on our last try and get in the show.

"Oh well, we'll just get ready for the race in Phoenix (Feb. 23-25). Drag racing is a very humbling sport."
