My wife just told me she heard on KNX news radio that Irwindale has been sold and will become a business park. Add this cool place to the list.

The track's Facebook has already said the 2023 schedule for both the oval track and dragstrip is nearly complete. And don't forget the time when, a few years ago, everyone was sure it was gonna become a strip mall, yet here we are, it's still there.

Basically, until the track comes out and says "this is our last race, we are closing for good", then I ain't buying it.

Can't confirm, but I had heard in the past that there was some issue with the land having problems and not being suitable for building without spending a significant amount of money.

"The seller was Irwindale Outlet Partners, based in Ontario, which paid $22 for the motor speedway in 2012."
WHAT! I would have doubled that offer.

That's not a very good deal....the Indians sold the entire island of Manhattan for $24 in 1626, or so the story goes. You'd be a fool to pay $44 for 63 acres with racing facilities included. :)

Forgive my paranoid tone, but after living through the closing of: San Fernando, Fontana 1&2, Irwindale 1, Colton, Lions, Brotherhood Raceway, Riverside International Raceway, Ontario and OCIR(that one still stings)-one tends to get a little pissy about race tracks and land development.

look at the up and coming racers, or lack thereof. Tracks are located on large parcels of land that cost money to upkeep. At some point overhead vs profits becomes obvious to sell.
Make 100k a year for the trouble or cash out for 10 million lump sum. Business 101 take the money and run. It is only a matter of time before all the tracks go away, we might not live to see it but it will be close.
Part will be all the EV craze, fuel costs will sky rocket, registering/insuring gas vehicles will be penalized , EPA will drop the hammer on modified vehicles, it is getting closer everyday. Some has already started.
A few places that hardcore racer/millionaires own will be around until they die and the kids do not want to be bothered running the track, just want to take the money and relax

The land is nothing but old tires but that doesnt mean they wont find a use for it other than a race track at some time in the future

Here is an LA Times article on the subject; note the aerial photo and what the lay of the land looks like, it's surrounded by gravel pits.

Track announcer Bob Beck who works at Irwindale says that the Irwindale City Council is the one pushing for the track to be converted to commercial buildings, but as the article states there are no environmental inpact studies (which could take years to complete). My guess is now that the Miller Brewing Co. plant has shutdown (site of the original dragstrip) and the loss of tax revenue, the city is looking for ways to get some of that money back.

Speaking of the Irwindale City Council, who remembers some 30 years ago they offered Al Davis, owner of the Raiders, $10 million to come out and look at some property for a new statium. He did and as soon as the check cleared said no and thank you.

Use as an industrial park is more likely than a strip mall. When you look at the area it's fairly obvious it's not exactly in the most desirable part of town, and while the EIR does take time it wouldn't be surprising if the findings limit it to industrial usage anyway since it doesn't need to be as "clean."

But, we'll still need racetracks going forward even as an EV society (gag) because people wanna race.........

Sunday! Sunday! See the wild JFR Chevy Volt take on the highly charged Mach-e of Bob Tasca in a no-holds barred best of three match race! High voltage fun for the whole family, and you can leave your earplugs at home! :)

So with all the manufacturers going woke, EV, how long before NHRA says EV only starting 20xx.

I'm hopeful cooler heads prevail and the nonsense is reversed. How does south Florida evacuate 300,000 electric cars that can't be charged during the next hurricane threat? How do Californians, when they've already been asking people not to charge their cars today, charge 500,000 more cars tomorrow? Especially considering California is shutting down power plants.

With regards to the EV push, ultimately the consumers will decide what will happen. I feel at this point there still is not enough interest for the market to grow significantly.

And no, car manufacturers are not going woke. They are business people who will take the govt. subsadies whether the cars are sold or not; free (tax payer) money. Only the Toyota CEO is willing to say what he feels in public.

GM & Phord both are going woke by going all EV because the Feds are paying them to do so. Phord just laid off 3K employees because of this nonsense. Mr. Toyoda is a smart man letting the market dictate demand for EV's. Like he said, they will not be able to supply the market for batteries because of ,wait for it, supply chain issues.

Randy, I haven't seen or heard one thing about any EV problems in the S E hurricane storm. WE know trouble had to exist, but nothing in the media has been said.
