NHRA Divisions?

Why is Illinois listed as division 3 (which i thought it always was) and division 5? And why is Colorado listed as division 5 (as it always was) and division 7?? When and why did this change?

i think the track in grand junction runs under D7, while bandimere was always D5, and would assume
they will be D5 again when new track is open.

last year (2025) right around this time, worldwide raceway hosted a D5 double D.
just this last weekend (2026), worldwide raceway hosted a D3 divisional.
i think illinois is listed as possible host for D3 and D5 because of st. louis? i'm not really sure.
now with SRCA coming back in great bend, KS, and potentially bandimere in next few years, plus flying H,
brainerd, and tri-state, i wonder if nhra will ever feel the need to go to st. louis again for D5 race?

The last time Cordova was NHRA, it was D5. Even though it's not NHRA anymore, maps showing the eastern part of Illinois as D5 are probably a remnant of that.

As for Colorado, Mike is correct that Grand Junction is D7. It wasn't always that way because they used to come to the D5 finals when I first got into a big dragster in the late 2000s. They switched probably around 2010.

Yes WWTR did host a double D5 event, the reason as you said was the lack of tracks in D5 last year.

For those that do not know, WWTR (in DIV 3) is 7 minutes away from downtown St. Louis (in DIV 5). Remember Bob Frey saying, "this is the only track where I can see my hotel from the race track. Yes, you can see downtown St. Louis from the track, it is 5.5 miles away from track.

Is it time for NHRA to reinvent/reimagine the Division alignment?

Does the 7 division model really work given fewer tracks, and tracks changing to other sanctioning bodies?

Are Grade Points obselete, or should they be?

To me it seems like a good idea to look at things every 5 yrs. due to how tracks are closing and or changing ownerships and sanctioning bodys.

JMHO, in the past before nat. events put quotas on for sportsman, and grade points rules were
not what they are today, the nat. events were a chance for locals to race on the big stage. local racers that for whatever
reasons do not have the time to race a lot to get grade points. anymore, the nat. event quotas fill long before the event,
with a lot of 'i'll hold you a spot' entries. it is what it is i guess. i miss the old days of 100+ stkrs. and super stockers at nat. events.
4 day events, with class on friday, and the race didn't end till around 5-7pm on sunday ...... i know we're never going back,
but i miss those days ...... thank goodness for nat. opens, divisionals, and double divisionals.
...... yes, i also recall when cordova was D5
