Steve Gibbs said they did away with the chief starters position with the release Gittings no mention that he was being replaced.

I FIND THAT INTERESTING SINCE GIBBS STEPPED AWAY FROM NHRA BACK IN 2017....BUT....THAT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING...........

I heard a RUMOR several years ago that NHRA was going to do away with the chief starter position and just use the divisional or track starter at National Events. It was seen as a cost saving measure and the feeling was the auto-start system is good enough to eliminate most starting line issues for the pros and the local guys had enough experience dealing with the sportsman racer. Maybe NHRA finally did it ...

That's a bummer. As much as most everyone disliked Rick Stewart (and liked Mark Lyle and Giddings) seems that the chief starter position is not something that, as the commercial goes, even a caveman could do it. Having a different starter at every event seems like it would result in a lack of continuity and probably more games being played on the starting line. For fans, maybe that's a good thing (the return of Pro Stock burndowns?) but i'm guessing racers will not like it.

I think that is one position where you need continuity and experience. I am having trouble thinking a divisional guy(or girl I guess) can shut off Force for being a leaker on the start line.

In all honesty MLB uses a pool of umpires and the game does just fine, despite enough rules and judgement calls to fill a swimming pool. I think a guy pushing a button to send a couple guys with a zillion passes down a dragstrip should be well within the ability of a Divisional starter.

With a different starter at the national events, there is no continuity in the way things get handled.
One starter might give a kill sign to a driver and let the driver run anyway. (bring back memories?)
Another starter might give the kill sign and stand in front of the car until it shuts off.
Seeing a combination only once or twice a year doesn’t lead to any kind of continuity.
And, in the interest of keeping things moving for TV, it will pay to have the same people at all the national events.
