My friend Hiproger By Alan Barrett

I met Roger Hood a few years ago on the Nitromater. As everyone who visits this site, he loved drag racing. Roger enjoyed talking about the technical side of drag racing. His father, Wilbert Hood, recently told me that if you were not talking about drag racing - Roger was not really interested in the conversation.

A truck driver by trade, Roger was forced into retirement shortly after he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Doctors removed a portion of a lung and chemotherapy/ radiation treatments were administered.

Disabled from the aftermath of this terrible disease, Roger turned to the internet to pass his time. Countless hours were passed with Roger reading and talking about the sport he loved.

Roger’s favorite class was Nitro Funny car and his driver was Whit Bazemore. Two years ago we noticed that Roger had not posted on the Mater in a while. Everyone thought the worst, and we all posted our concerns for our friend. At the next race, during a top-end interview, Whit sent Roger a get well wish.

Last year, Roger was hospitalized with breathing problems. It was then Roger was informed that the cancer had returned. During Roger’s hospital stay, his spirits were uplifted by the phone calls from Alan Reinhart and Whit Bazemore.

Though he knew his chances were not good, Roger never wavered. He did not want his online buddies know of his illness. Roger wanted no special treatment. I’ll never forget the day I called Roger and informed him of the special day he was going to spend with Whit at Indy. He kept saying that he didn’t know what he did to deserve this but he was so grateful.

Sunday night, October 8, our friend Hiproger signed off the Nitromater for the last time. He slipped off to sleep and was summoned home, free from pain forever.

It was our pleasure to have known you, Hip. Say hello to all of our drag racing friends up there.
