I enjoyed this footage of the '68 NHRA Springnationals, held at Englishtown for just that one year. Because it was filmed from the grandstands (by Robert
Fausak) the cars are pretty small. However, you can still make out a fair amount of them. Most notable: Don Garlits, winning his first Springnationals over Beebe & Mulligan in TF and "Fast Eddie" Schartman's "Air-Lift Rattler" S/XS Cougar against Jack Ditmars' "Mini Brute" A/XS Opel (probably for Super Eliminator). After offering FC eliminator in '67 (Bristol and Indy only) NHRA dropped them from the '68 national event slate. Years ago John Jodauga told me this was NHRA's response to a lack of FC participants in '67. I thought it was a horrible mistake because FC's became extremely popular and professional in '68. In fact, I still consider it to be the best overall year for fantastic FC paint jobs!
Other recognizable cars in this footage: the Ramchargers and Chris "The ChiZler" Karamesines fuelers..."Ohio George" Montgomery's '67 AA/GS Mustang...both the Sox & Martin GTX (which won SS Eliminator) and Cuda...Grumpy's rare black vinyl roof Nova...
Again, some really neat stuff here...thanks, Bob!
Hi Cliff, I'm hanging in there! I may soon be forced into a slightly early retirement. If so, I'll have more time to take a few more passes down those amazing ghost drag strips of yesteryear!
