Ron Capps in his Mopar-powered Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car for Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) reached the finals of the 26th Annual AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas.
Capps, who began the weekend as the No. 7 qualifier, downed Tony Pedregon in the opening round to set up a quarterfinals matchup with his teammate Johnny Gray. Capps got off the line first against Gray and turned in a run of 4.228/301.20 to move on to the semifinals. In the semis, Capps was paired up with his brother Jon. Both drivers got off the line at exactly the same time with a 0.094-second reaction time, with Ron Capps taking the win at the top end in a pedal fest, after both cars lost traction early in the run.
In the final round, Capps was pitted against top qualifier Cruz Pedregon. Capps left the line first with a 0.055-second reaction time followed by a pass of 4.270/293.66 with Pedregon tracking him down with a run of 4.200/302.48.
Fellow Mopar-driven DSR pilots Matt Hagan, Jack Beckman and Gray all advanced to the quarterfinals at Dallas. Hagan was victorious in the first round against Mike Neff before falling to Melanie Troxel. Beckman defeated Tim Wilkerson in the opening frame before bowing out to Jon Capps, while Gray picked up a first round win over Paul Lee.
Hagan is currently second in the Funny Car standings, following the second round of the NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoffs, with Beckman fourth and Capps fifth. Next up for the Mopar-powered NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series competitors is the 27th Annual NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pa., near Reading., Sept. 29–Oct. 2.
