Millican 16th after second session (1 Viewer)

Pomona, Friday: Clay Millican's second qualifying run Friday for Sunday's Auto Club Finals was better than his first attempt Thursday, but he remained in the same position -- sitting just outside the starting Top Fuel line-up.

Millican drove the Nitro Fish/Hope4Sudan/Lend American dragster to a thousand-foot time of 3.963 seconds at 300.73 mph and wound up 16th. But the driver from Drummonds, Tenn., sees improvement coming in Saturday's two sessions that will set the starting line-ups.

"Basically, Thursday we were over center (on the tune-up) to the point we got the tires loose and Friday we went too far backwards," he said. "The car left the starting line a little weak and made a pretty good run to the 330 (feet), but from that point forward Lance (Larsen, crew chief) was worried about getting the tires loose.

"That’s one of the problems of being one of the first cars out (in the session) . . . you can’t watch anybody. We played it on the conservative side and it didn’t go as quick as we wanted it to, but it did go down the race track nice and clean. We just have to go quicker on Saturday."
