It was sad to see Mike's reaction ( not  ) to Big Jim's win yesterday... Led me to think... this isn't how its supposed to be :(

I don't care what anybody say's, you can't watch Funnycar Summer and not think in a perfect world... these two should still be racing together!

It's got to kill Mike to see his Dad on the starting line week after week... Its my prayer that they get things patched up becasuse life is too short and the father/son relationship is one of the great things we have in this life... way more important than racin;)

I have often wondered what happened between those two.

Life is too short to have a long last rift between a Father and a Son. It seems this one has been going on a long time. That is time they can never get back....

Maybe Jim should talk to Connie. Or John Medlen.

Maybe Mike should make a move to try and patch things up.

Sad.....

Sometimes things between Father and son can not be patched up.. Sometimes its just better to "let sleeping dogs lie"... For this to be going on as long as it has there has to be some deep seeded issues..

Diane is Mike's step mother. I think the rift came with Jim's divorce from Mike's mother. That's as I remember it anyway........:(

I agree it was sad. Life is too short. Even if you don't want to spend holidays together at least be happy for the other persons accomplishments.

Tommy - this isn't directed at you, personally but who's to say Mike isn't happy for his Dad's team? Isn't he supposed to be impartial in the booth?

As far as the strained relationship, while it is/may be sad I've been there/done that with my Mom...I made many attempts to reconcile...it can't be one sided and after while you give up. It's too late now as she passed away last February, I've come to terms with it.

You can pick your friends - you can't pick your relatives :(

I agree with you, but unless I missed something, he had no comment at all--unbiased or not. The silence from him was obvious to me.

I don't watch NASCAR or IRL racing that much, but I remember when one of the commentators who was retired had such a great reaction when his son won his first race. It might have been Indy or Daytona, not sure. I may be mistaken, but I think it might have been Darrel Waltrip. I just remember thinking how genuinely thrilled he was at that moment. It didn't sound bad that he was so happy for his son. I am sure someone here will remember who/what race it was. But I sat there listening and smiling, thinking 'How cool to have your Dad in the booth' for this important day.

Very sad for the Dunn's though, whatever the reason is. I hope he/they find it worth it.

It was Ned Jarrett when Dale was on his way to winning Daytona battling Dale Earnhardt...He took heat for it too but hey, how often would you find yourself in that situation...

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission :D

That was quick!! Thank you. I still can hear him though and I thought it was cool. Guess I wouldn't be a very good broadcaster. Emotions can get the best of a person!
Thanks Cheryl.

yeah that was when darrell was commentating on fox when mikey waltrip won the 01 500...must of been tough to know that they lost dale just a few hours later though:(

It was both Jarrett and Waltrip blubbering. BTW, they lost D.E. well before a few hours later. It was pretty quick. It just happened to a friend of mine in Toledo Friday night.

I've heard Mike Dunn make comments before, and not too long ago on the coverage he had been asked about why he never drove for his dad. If I remember right, he spoke of how Big Jim is hard to get along with. Talked about the days of Jim being his crew chief, he said been there, done that.

As long as I can remember in the early 80's, the Fireman's Quickie had the names Jim & Dianne Dunn on the car, and Mike & Jim were teamed in 1991 on Ed Abel's Snickers FC.

I know that it's best sometimes for families into racing for them NOT to deal with each other. But if there is a true rift between Jim & Mike, hopefully they can resolve it. Life's too short.

My point exactly!
