If a city the size of Memphis can't support a racing facility, it indicates that the business model of the NHRA needs to be substantially improved.
Any thoughts out there? . . . . as if I didn't know.
Cheers,
Ed

NHRA is only in town once a year. A drag strip needs to be much more active then just once a year to survive. As many errors as nhra makes I don't see how a track failing can be pinned on them.

As much as I hate to see a race cut from the schedule, I doubt that very many people were looking forward to being in Memphis in August. The reschedule could have been the final straw. Once upon a time, it was hoped that this race would move to Mobile....then, that track got axed before construction. It would have been great having a race that close to home (as long as they didn't try to run it in August). Has anybody heard anything on the strip that was supposed to be built in Tangipahoa Parish in LA. (not too far from Baton Rouge)?

In reality it's better for the pro teams for NHRA to just go ahead and cut a race. But I'm sure NHRA wishes they would have waited and renewed with Virginia.

Yeah- run a 12 race series, and cut the guys loose to run match races again....

When Bobby Cross worked for Autostar and Super Chevy before Roger Gustin purchased the Super Chevy Series, he told me once that NHRA couldn't understand why the Super Chevy Show at Memphis was at the time about the third or fourth largest in the series, yet the NHRA race was one of the poorest attended on the NHRA tour. August certainly wont work in Memphis with the heat and mostly the humidity, but you really cant blame NHRA if the race is poorly attended by the locals. There were several events at Memphis each year, and I know (since we set up on the midway at each one since 1987) that Super Chevy was always packed. I didnt attend any of the round track stuff, so I really cant say as far as those races go. Regardless, it is apparent the place just wasnt making any money.

Saying Millington is in Memphis is like saying Commerce is in Atlanta.

Memphis Motorsports Park is a helluva lot closer to Memphis than Atlanta Dragway is to Atlanta.

Being familiar with how things work at the circle track at Bristol. The season ticket holder policy they have in place ties up $$$ months and months before each race. And that's double for 2 races a year.

I'm just not sure a 2nd race at the strip is reasonable.
Though I would support it myself because of proximity.

Thanks for an intelligent, and intelligible, answer to my central question. It appears from your experience cited that more was "broken" than the business model.
