POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 12) - Ever since Greg Stanfield announced he was going to run the first few races of the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series in the MAVTV/Lucas Oil Chevy Camaro, he and his small Pro Stock team have been preparing non-stop for this weekend's 53rd annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
"It's been a thrash getting this thing put together," Stanfield said. "We're trying to get everything dialed in so we can go to these races and do some good."
Stanfield will compete in Pomona with a crew of two, consisting of his brother, Mike, and veteran crewman Mike Stryker. With only a few hands available to work on the car, efficiency will be crucial.
"Getting everything ready to go racing is a challenge for a team as small as ours," Stanfield said. "We went to Las Vegas to break in tires and clutch discs, and we're going to have to work smart in Pomona because there's not many of us on the team.
"We'll do whatever it takes to get the car ready to go. We work well together."
Last year with a limited schedule and a limited budget, Stanfield raced 14 times and reached the semifinals twice.
"We're working on some new stuff," he said. "We probably won't have it done for a while, but we'll take what we have and do our best to get the car in the show this weekend."
Qualifying for the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals gets under way at 2 p.m. PST on Thursday with a single session. There will be another single session with the same start time on Friday. Two qualifying sessions are on tap for Saturday beginning at noon. Eliminations are Sunday with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and racing at 11 a.m. ESPN2 will air the qualifying show at 10 p.m. EST on Saturday and the eliminations show at 8 p.m. Sunday.
