Just curious, why do some drivers comp numbers start or end with a letter , i.e. R210 FSS/B Richard Bierie or 173L FSS/E Philip Lankford ?

Because they are running out of unique 4-digit numbers. The first number is always the division that the racer received the license in, so they are actually only 3 digit numbers.
