perfect placement. can't help but see it all day long.

minnesotan brett speer with nat. event win #6. .003 10.30 on a 10.29 to take super stock vegas2 trophy over jimmy hidalgo jr.

SS ..... McClanahan 21 pts. behind hildalgo jr. going into pomona2. hell of a run against wadzarsyck in final.
SOOOOO many sportsman drivers are so damn good.

and without a contrived playoff, joe sorenson wins STOCK championship by 1 single point over jimmy hidalgo jr. what a great season for both.
question: joe was 20 pts. back of jimmy coming into vegas2. joe wins race and goes 4 rounds further than jimmy.
LODRS 7-7 both competitors lose in E5 yesterday. joe wins championship by 1 point. seems like he should have been ahead by more?
what am i missing?

Maybe Jimmy had one more division race to claim points and Joe didn't ?

that's what i was thinking too. they both must have claimed the national? and only jimmy able to claim the divisional?
when jimmy lost in E5 to parker theobald it was all over...... holy cow. one single point.

One thing you have to remember is that late-year races don't just add to the points total for sportsman classes like the pros. National points for these classes can only claim three out of up to six entered national events and five out of eight divisionals, so Sorensen's win at the Vegas national didn't simply add 105 points; it also subtracted 62, which was his worst claimed national up to that point, netting only a 43-point gain. Hidalgo didn't do well enough at the Vegas national to replace a previous race, so his total went unchanged and he came into the divisional down 23 points.

At the divisional, Sorensen was out of races to claim, so he could only enter as a blocker. As mentioned, Hidalgo lost in round 5 of a 7-round race, good for 72 points. His worst divisional that he was counting at that point was a 50, so he netted a gain of 22 points for the race, one behind Sorensen and out of races to claim.

Everything for points earning is explained here: https://www.nhra.com/how-points-are-earned/lucas-oil-national-championship-points

It might not be that close once it's over. Joe has it locked, but he could still add to his total in Pomona. Jimmy can't, he is claimed out. The point being that if Jimmy had taken the lead, Joe wasn't out of it.

When Cooter won the Stock Chamionship in 2022 he won on a tiebreaker. He and Brad Burton were tied.

The first tiebreaker is head to head. They only raced one time all year, in Vegas when Jimmy won with a MOV. of 0.0003

I think that 3/10,000 of a second is the closest championship margin ever.

Compared to that, 1 point is a blowout....🤣

Alan

thanks brad and alan for extrapolating how the points played out, and are playing out. good stuff.
