A year ago, Peggy Llewellyn experienced one of the greatest moments of her drag racing life when she won the Fall Nationals Pro Stock Motorcycle title, assuring her of a place in the four-rider, two-race championship playoffs.

There are no title aspirations this time around because Llewellyn has run a mere handful of events in 2008, but the rider from San Antonio has the opportunity to defend her race title when the O’Reilly Sure Start Batteries Fall Nationals gets underway Friday at the Texas Motorplex.

Llewellyn will be aboard the R2B2 Motors Buell from Matt Guidera’s Mohegan Sun team for the second time this season. She made her team debut in the U.S Nationals at Indianapolis three weeks ago. Now she’s pleased to be able to race in front of her family and friends.

“Most of my family and friends can come to this race so I’m going to enjoy spending time with them as well,” said Llewellyn. “I have awesome memories of last year’s race in Dallas and I hope I can go back and repeat. It feels great to be going in as the defending champion. We’re going to see what we can do . . . go some rounds and hopefully turn on the win light and maybe pick up another Wally (winner’s trophy nickname)”

While she’s vying for a repeat victory, Llewellyn will be attempting to help Guidera in his quest for the NHRA POWERade Series championship. He is one of 10 riders in contention this second of five Countdown to 1 playoff series races. He is seventh, 76 points behind the leader.

“Since we aren’t running for the championship, maybe we can be a help for Matt so he can move up a few more positions and get closer to that No. 1 he’s going for,” added Llewellyn.

“I feel very comfortable about racing this weekend,” she continued. “I had to change my riding style during the U.S. Nationals. That was a challenge I had to face, and I got through it. In the three weeks I’ve had off, I have relied so much on my mental runs. I have been practicing my mental runs and incorporating my new riding style into them. That way when we get back on the track again I’m not going back and I can continue going forward.

“I feel very comfortable about racing this weekend and I’m looking forward to it. I can’t wait to get back on the track.”
