Qualifying at the NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston, Texas turned out to be a two-part procedure for Jason Line and the Summit Racing team, as well as the entire Pro Stock field. Although the temperatures remained the same over the two days at Royal Purple Raceway, the eighty percent humidity on Saturday stifled the naturally-aspirated Pro Stock cars, preventing any changes among the top twelve runners from the day before, with the final two attempts being used primarily to work on race day set-ups.
Luckily, Line’s 6.579-second, 210.47 mph clocking from Friday had essentially locked him into the fourth position for Sunday’s final eliminations. With his runs on Saturday netting the fifth quickest time in each session, the Troutman, NC resident was pleased with his performance while acknowledging there was still work to be done in order to challenge for their third win of the young Full Throttle Drag Racing season.
“These conditions have historically not been the best for us,” explained Line. “Fortunately, we seem to be struggling a little less than normal this weekend, which is certainly a positive, showing us that we are headed in the right direction on some things. Obviously Ronnie (Humphrey, who qualified No. 1 in a car operated in conjunction with the KB Racing team) is running really well, which is exciting for all of us.
“My Summit Racing Pontiac is running well and although it’s not extremely fast, it’s very steady, which is certainly what you want to have on race day. We continue to make progress, and although we have a ways to go, I think all three cars (including Humphrey and his Summit Racing teammate Greg Anderson) should be in contention tomorrow, which is a very good thing, and we just need to make the most of it.”
