Event: 44th annual Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals
Location: Auto-Plus Raceway, Gainesville, Fla.
Day/Date: Saturday,March 16, 2013
Summit Racing Pro Stock driver Jason Line has already been among the quickest drivers at the 44th annual Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals, but he hasn't yet reached his full potential with his blue Summit Racing Chevy Camaro, and he aims to change that on Sunday as championship eliminations play out.
Line picked up a pair of valuable bonus points during qualifying for logging top-three passes in two of the four sessions. The first day of the event provided excellent weather conditions, and the field was quick and fast. In the first round, the Mooresville, N.C.-based driver was third-quickest overall with a solid 6.483 at an efficient 213.10 mph, but round two wasn't quite as rewarding as he tripped the final timer on the racetrack with a tire-rattling 6.53.
Saturday brought about a new day and two more sessions to try to work his way closer to the top of the line-up, and although the racing surface was better, the weather conditions weren’t quite as favorable as the day before. Few drivers made measurable gains, and Line was again third-quickest of the session with a 6.512 at 212.69 mph. He ended qualifying in the heat of the day with a 6.523, 212.66.
"We felt like we learned a few things with our Chevy Camaros in testing that we had hoped would really help us here in Gainesville and throughout the season, so we are a little disappointed that we haven't yet seen the progress that we thought we'd made. We haven't performed as well as we think we should here, but tomorrow is a new day. We just have to keep digging, that's all you can do, and this Summit Racing team is very, very good at that. The only answer is to keep working and keep trying."
No. 3 qualifier Line will square off with Rodger Brogdon in the first round of eliminations, a driver he most recently raced at the 2012 season-ender in Pomona just a few months ago, when Line was first to the finish for the win light.
"We're going to rethink a few things before tomorrow, and we won't make any wholesale changes for raceday, but we'll try to tweak what we have here," said Line. "I'm happy to say that my Summit Racing Camaro went down the racetrack all four runs, and we have a good package; we'll just need to take what we have and massage it a little bit. We always hope for the best, and on raceday in Gainesville, I can promise you that the KB Racing team will be going after the trophy."
