DINWIDDIE, Va. -- The Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park now has the distinction of hosting the quickest Pro Stock field in the history of drag racing. It was also a record setting weekend for Tommy Lee, driver of the Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevy Cobalt, with new career-bests in both e.t. and speed.
The event was delayed one week due to rain, but proved to be worth the wait once the Pro Stock field hit the track, establishing a record bump spot that would have been below the national record only a few weeks prior.
"Conditions couldn't have been more perfect this weekend," Lee said. "The weather was cool and the sun was out to put heat on the track. With conditions like that, all of us in the Slammers pit were ready to see what we could do."
Lee's quickest pass came during Saturday's early session, when he ran a 6.602 at 208.17 mph, lowering his career-best by more than .03, and placing him no. 6 in the field.
"I knew the car was on a good run," Lee said. "It really yanked me into the seat when it took off. The numbers that are coming up on the scoreboard in Pro Stock this weekend are unbelievable."
Lee faced Tom Martino in Sunday's first round of eliminations, hoping to eventually meet up with new teammate Jeg Coughlin for an all Slammers semi-final. Unfortunately, their meeting would have to wait as Martino left the starting line first, pulling ahead for the win as Lee's Cobalt went into tire shake early in the run.
"Overall this was a great debut for our Slammers two-car-team," Lee said. "Jeg and I qualified no. 6 and no. 7. Then if you add [Dave] Connolly's Torco car into the mix (who also runs Cagnazzi engines and chassis) we had all three team cars in the top half of the quickest Pro Stock field in history. Jeg and Dave's cars are brand new, and mine is only a few races old, so that really say's something about these teams."
