If LE Tonglet’s goal of repeating as NHRA’s Full Throttle Series Pro Stock Motorcycle champion is to be fulfilled, he can ill afford another race like the playoff opener last Sunday.
A broken motor from the Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks Suzuki GSXR has been sent for repairs and should be back in place when the title chase resumes with the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, Friday through Sunday.
Without that power plant, Tonglet qualified 15th and lost in the first round at Charlotte, sending him from second to fifth place (2,111 points) in the standings.
“We know we can’t go out early in any of the races,” said Tonglet. “We need to make a big jump up and try to at least get to the finals at Dallas to keep up with Eddie (Krawiec) and Karen (Stoffer). It’s going to be a tough fight.”
Krawiec leads the series with 2,237 points and Stoffer is second at 2,174.
Tonglet is the defending race champion and says he is “confident going back there because we did do well last year. We’ll have the cylinder heads back in time for Friday’s qualifying and I hope we fly all weekend. If we do, we’ll still have a shot at winning the championship again.”
This is the second of three consecutive races. The third Countdown stop is in Reading, Pa., Sept. 29-Oct. 2.
