Well after 47 years of mostly 20/15-20/18 vision, I think the time for Glasses has arrived! The last time I had my eyes checked I was at 20/15, that was in '04. But about 2 years ago I started noticing reading newspapers became a back away for Clear reading habit. And in just the last 3-4 weeks, my Long distance vision is becoming Blurry ever so slightly! So know I'm asking is Lasik a Cure all? Or should I just wear glasses as needed???

I was at 20/600 when I got my Lasik. Yes....that's 600! I've been 20/15 for 7 years. Now, that being said....that corrected my nearsightedness. Over the last couple of years, I can't see extremely up close small text. The doc told me at the time of my Lasik that he can't stop my eyes from getting old :p so, unfortunately he couldn't stop that from happening. I bought $8 walmart glasses for that issue. My arms are still long enough to accommodate most of the time though. Anyway, I understand that now they CAN use Laser surgery to correct that also.

I was very fortunate with my surgery and results and HIGHLY recommend it when asked. :)

If you're a good candidate and have access to a great doctor I'd go the LASIK route. I've never had it but I've wanted it for many years. I started out with glasses in 8th grade and switched over to contacts at age 19 and it was the best thing I've done. Glasses suck! The lenses are always getting dirty or dusty, they're a pain in the rain and your depth perception isn't nearly as good. When I switched to contacts it was a revelation, everything looked so much better than with glasses. I know a few people that have had LASIK and they all love it. Someday I'll get it done too.

Joe, you may just be suffering from "Old age eyesight", even though 47 is just a spring chicken. (Hey, I can remember being 47!) Anyway, you need to get your doctor's advice. I had Lasik 8 years ago and it was one of the best 30 minutes I have ever spent. Went from Coke bottles to nothing in 1/2 hour. 35 seconds per eye to be exact. But even now I need reading glasses for help. It's just what happens to your eyes at this age. It's called presbyopia or something like that. The eyes just can't adjust like they used to. If the doctor thinks that Lasik will help you, go for it. If he says that some of the $8.00 reading glasses are all that you need, I'd believe him at that, also. Lasik has some disadvantages if you are not currently wearing glasses or contacts. It really screws up the night vision, especially for the first six months or so, and even 8 years later, I get a lot of halos and glare from oncoming headlights. That's one of the first things that they will tell you about Lasik. Everyone that I know that has had it done says that they need really good light to be able to see to read. But it sure beats wearing glasses.

Depends on you, I guess. LOL, I'm always one cautious step behind technologically. My eyes are bad enough that I was only a candidate for hard contact lenses. One session of trying to keep those monsters in about twenty years ago disqualified me. I've been stuck with wearing "machines" on my head most of my life and I HATED THEM! I never found a pair that didn't eventually become very annoying. Always had sore spots behind my ears.

Now they make soft contacts that I can wear. Easily one of the best changes in my life last year. I think driving trucks aggravated my situation because of the constant bouncing/pushing them back up. Only thing that sucks is being used to having sorta safety glasses on before! You'll be working on a car and not even close your eyes when rust falls because you're used to glasses catching it for you.

I'll probably get Lasik when the NEXT thing comes out and I can get the do it yourself kit in the checkout line at Walmart. :D

I tell ya one thing, though. Recently I messed up and thought I had one more pair of contacts than I did and had to go back to the "machines" for a week. There's DEFINITELY a difference in the treatment you get from people depending on whether you wear glasses or not. Without glasses, I get more strangers starting conversations. With them, people shun you. Many people will actually act as if you have a lower level of intelligence if you have glasses on.

I read somewhere that when the U.S. pulled out Vietnam, the wearing of glasses was an automatic death sentence with the communists because it gave the impression of intelligence/someone who could think for themselves. Go figger.

Even after Lasik your vision can still change, which can be a sign of another underlying issue. So it's important to keep fit, live healthy and regularly have your eyes checked. I know a hockey player who did Lasik, and now he actually has to wear a Contact in one eye because his vision has changed again on him. I have no idea, but perhaps the Lasik clinics put some kind of follow-up clause in thier agreements??? I'd say definatley do your homework first. I'm a contact user myself. I've tried all kinds of rewetting drops.... but I don't care what anybody says...for dry eyes, NOTHING works better than taking deep breaths through your nose while walking up & down the nitro pits during warm-up time!!

I say wear the glasses!!! They look sexy!!!

Joey, I went right to contacts in about `83...I wasn`t going to school wearing glasses! I`d love to go the Lasik route, but I can`t because I`ve got a bad astygmatism (sic?) in my left eye. In fact, my eye doctor says I`ll probably have to go to hard contacts in the near future, it`s so bad. I keep a pair of glasses around the house so on weekends or at night I can take the contacts out and give my eyes a rest. See you and your specs at Pomona in about five weeks!

Hey Kelly, look who else had LASIK:

Meet our Patients - Shapiro Laser Eye Center - David Shapiro, M.D - Ventura, Oxnard, CA

Sexy huh? been wearing glasses since I was 5...

Have Bifocals that I wear during the day and reading books, and a pair just for close work(computer stuff, model building) for evenings... would wear the bi's all the time, but then I get a sore neck from head movement trying to read...

so I look like a geek... big whoop...

And Joe... BEER effects your eyesight, makes the world look blurry after a 12pack or so....

What is Strange is my vision is only blurry part of the time, and when I say Blurry that doesn't mean I can't read street signs or anything, just a bit fuzzy!

Joe, sound like 'old age'... but if the fuzziness comes and go, it could be other issues... had a physical lately?

I wore contacts for 23 years until Sept '03 and got the Lasik done at age 39, not at a strip mall type place either. Had it done by my clinic's ophthamologist and have never regretted it. However, like Kelly said, they tell you that this particular procedure will not affect your need for reading glasses over the age of 40. For myself, I've noticed over about the last year or so that the need for them is getting greater so I'll have to cave and get some $1 cheaters.

Both of my sis-in-laws have had Lasik and they love it. One got it at Dr. Coleman's in town and the other got it at David Berninski's office.

I wear glasses (thought about getting Oakley frames but figured I'd still look like a nerd if I paid 300 dollars for frames or 75), but one of the best things about mine is that they are Transition lenses so I dont have to worry about sunglasses. They get dark when I go outside and light when I come in. The cold weather makes the lenses take longer to get clear but that's not often anyway.

I think when I get the next pair, I'm gonna get the new smudge resistant ones, that are more resistant to the oils on your skin. My nieces and nephews love to leave finger prints on the Auntie's glasses.
