TOPEKA, Kan. (June 3) – Despite a sensational .020 reaction time, six-time champion Kenny Bernstein could not overcome a loss of horsepower caused by a dropped cylinder in the first round of O’Reilly Summernationals competition.
Bernstein qualified 10th at Heartland Park Topeka with a 4.877-second elapsed time at 310.20 mph and was looking forward to race day.
Bernstein’s quickest reaction time of the entire Funny Car category in eliminations, couldn’t salvage a first round win against Ashley Force. Bernstein clocked 5.000/304.87 to Force’s 4.856/307.51
“We had two good, consistent qualifying runs on Saturday to set up our combination for Sunday,” said Bernstein. “In fact, in one qualifying session, we were low elapsed time of the round.
“On Sunday in the first round of eliminations, we dropped a cylinder at the hit of the throttle and that spelled the end of the day for us. It’s disappointing to say the least.”
Bernstein is 16th in NHRA Funny Car point standings.
