KENNY BERNSTEIN’S MONSTER ENERGY/LUCAS OIL FUNNY CAR TEAM GAINING MOMENTUM AS NHRA CIRCUIT HEADS TO DENVER

MORRISON, Colo. – Kenny Bernstein is a four-time winner of the Mopar Mile-High Nationals, and when NHRA competition returns to picturesque Bandimere Speedway July 13-15, Bernstein will be looking to add to his trophy collection.

Three of Bernstein’s Denver trophies were earned during his 1980s Funny Car reign (1981, 1985, 1987). The six-time NHRA world champ returned to the Funny Car ranks this season at the wheel of the Monster Energy/Lucas Oil car and earned a runner-up finish July 1 at the inaugural Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk , Ohio .

“There’s no doubt that this has been one of the toughest fields in NHRA history in the Funny Car category,” said Bernstein. “To add to the complexity, the thin mile-high air will also play a part in making tuning these 7,000-horsepower nitro-breathing engines a very difficult job. This is the only race on the circuit where the tune-up is radically different.

“This season started off a little slow for us, but we’ve been gaining momentum. At Norwalk we proved we were making performance strides by running low elapsed time of eliminations.

“We have a couple of goals on our radar screen right now. One is to win an event or two for our sponsors and fans, and the other is to make the cut line for the countdown to eight for the new championship chase format. Since we drive a Dodge Charger by Mopar, a win at our sponsor’s race would be icing on the cake.

“We are just outside that prestigious eight cut line, but with five races remaining we are certainly within striking distance.

“Crew chief Jimmy Walsh and the team are really focused. Denver begins the three-event West Coast Swing and it will be critical to go rounds. It is going to be a dogfight to the end and we have our fingers crossed.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying begins Friday, July 13 at 5:30 p.m. with a second session at 8 p.m. There are two qualifying rounds scheduled Saturday, 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. , with eliminations set for noon Sunday.
