BERNSTEIN’S DRIVING IMPRESSIVE ON THE MOUNTAIN

MORRISON, Colo. (July 15) – Kenny Bernstein mustered all his driving skills at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals but a spectacular reaction time and some intense work in the cockpit, couldn’t save him from loss of traction.

Bernstein piloted his Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car to the No. 7 qualifying berth at Bandimere Speedway with a 4.916-second elapsed time at 309.20 mph.

In his first round match against Jeff Arend on Sunday, Bernstein put some cushion in the elapsed time “bank” by virtue of a superb .031-second reaction time vs. Arend’s .092-second reaction time. In a close match, the reaction time probably would have won him the round. But shortly after Bernstein was out of the gate, he was up in smoke.

“Bottom line we gave it too much horsepower and overpowered the track”, said Bernstein.

Bernstein was on an off the throttle, trying to get traction to the ground until the Dodge Charger made a vicious turn toward the wall. Bernstein straightened the car out and motored across the starting line behind Arend (5.153/293.66 vs. Bernstein’s 8.948/95.53).

“It’s exciting to drive these Funny Cars,” said Bernstein. “You can man handle these machines to a certain extent, but we just couldn’t get it to calm down enough to get traction to the ground.

“It’s tough to tame the mountain. We’ll be happy to get back to sea level next weekend in Seattle .”

The six-time world champ’s reaction time was the best of eliminations in both the Funny Car and Top Fuel categories.

Bernstein is 15th in NHRA Funny Car standings, 106 points out of the countdown to eight.
