My wife and I got to France on Monday so that we could tour the beaches at Normandy.
We went to Pearl Harbor for our 20th anniversary and we are now just a few months away from our 40th anniversary.
The American cemetery is, at the same time, stunningly beautiful but tear-jerkingly somber.
We used a tour company and that was some of the best money we could have spent as it was an all-day tour and I didn’t have to drive.
We were taken to Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, and then to Utah Beach. The expansiveness of all five beachheads was much larger than I imagined. Pictures just don’t do any justice to that entire front.
Seeing the German fortifications all along Normandy showed how brutal the invasion became.
All the Allied troops who went ashore finally overwhelmed the German defenses. But over 9300 Americans are buried there as a result.
The cemetery is immaculately maintained.
