Why in the world are fuel cars still using sheetmetal oil pans? This seems to me to be one of the most ridiculous things I've put my thoughts to recently. I would think a forged/integral cover might go a long way to keeping the sludge inside the bottom end when something goes wrong. I know somebody's going to say something about how if the sides of the block don't hold up well to loose rods then... well, you get the picture. I just seem to always see bigger holes in the pans than in the blocks most of the time. Any takers?

I don't think they are sheet metal. But weight would be one issue, and it is cheaper to blow stuff out of the pan than it is to window blocks. The diapers usually do a pretty good job of containment on the pans, there is nothing on the blocks.
