Jones looking for hometown magic at the Motorplex

ENNIS, Texas - Former two-time NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion Jimmy Jones and the Kelly & Jones Tremor Racing team will be looking to return to their championship form during this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas. The weekend not only has implications towards the series championship, but a strong showing can clinch another Jeg's Sportsman All-Stars berth for Jones who enters the event tied for second, 31 points out of first place.

Jones, a practicing pharmacist in Cleburne, Texas, when not racing, hopes to build on the progress the team made at the recent O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston. While the team hasn't ran the numbers they are accustomed to, the team is working diligently to find the root of their tireshake problems.

"We made some progress, but we're still not where we need to be," said Jones. "We've been having trouble making the car get wheel speed early in the run. We finally lowered the wheelie bar and hopped the car up enough there in the second round; it got too much wheel speed and shook the tires. We changed quite a bit there in Houston trying to find the problem. We ran decent, but we want to get the car back to the way it's been running."

"We bought a new batch of clutch discs this year," Jones continued. "We put some old discs from last year back in the car for this weekend to see if that's what's making the car act so different."

Competitors in NHRA's sportsman classes can earn points to not only the national and divisional championships, but the Jeg's Sportsman All-Star Team, which has it's own points standings, and generally starts and ends at mid year. The Jeg's Sportsman All-Star Race, which is held in conjunction with the Torco Race Fuels Nationals in Chicago, Jun. 5-8, takes the top points earners from each of NHRA's seven geographical divisions and pits them in a race to determine the All-Star Champion. Jones enters the event tied for second with Lee Callaway and trails Steve Harker by 31 points.

"This is our hometown race, so you always try a little harder at home," stated Jones. "Not to mention, if we don't get back on track, we're really going to be behind the eight ball in points. Nearly all of the team is from the Metroplex area, so we all want to do well. One of our biggest supporters, Painless Products, is based out of Dallas, so we'd love to make a good showing for them and our other sponsors Comp Cams, Vistaplex Video Surveillance, Royal Purple Oil and Skinz Wraps."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, followed by two sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
